Leyendas del Doo Wop: Entrevista a Ronnie Dee & The Satellites ~ Doo Wop Legends: Ronnie Dee & The Satellites Interview

The Crows, The Four Dueces, The Flamingos, The Midnighters,… (oh no! yo no soy tan mayor, ja ja)

¡Y no lo es, Ronnie! ¿Cuándo conoció a Gary, Joe, Ron y George?

¿A qué edad empezó usted a cantar?

Ronnie Dee and The Satellites, formed in 1958, Ronnie Dee, Ron Grenier, George Tootell, Joe Fiske and Gary Sabourin are still performing, this group is what Doo Wop and Music from the Golden Era of Rock and Roll is all about. The group is currently busy with concerts, parties, cruises,...

Good afternoon, Ronnie, thank you for this interview. First I may ask, who were your biggest musical influences?
Ronnie Dee: As far as the 50´s and 60´s are concerned, I would say people like Mel Carter, Jimmy Clanton, Little Anthony and The Imperials, The Vogues and so many more, it would take me a long time to list.

In your opinion, what are the Doo Wop Roots?
Ronnie Dee: I would venture to say mostly Gospel and Blues,… I started listening to real Doo Wop in the mid 50´s,… groups like The Crows, The Four Dueces, The Flamingos, The Midnighters,… (not that I am that old, ha ha)

You are not, Ronnie! Where did you met Gary, Joe, Ron and George?
Ronnie Dee: I met Ronnie first,… he and I used to sit on his front porch at night and harmonize,… Joe was next to join us and Gary and George came a little later,… we decided in 1958 to put the group together for real,… started rehearsing a few nights a week and found out we worked together pretty well.

 When did you start singing?
Ronnie Dee: I started my career in 1957 singing at nursing homes and parties (at age 15), and we started singing as Ronnie and The Satellites in 1958

"Last Night I Dreamed” became a popular song , when did you recorded it?
Ronnie Dee: We recorded our first 45 rpm in the month of May in 1958 at Ace Recording Studios. We recorded a second 45 in 1960 entitled Blue Moon / Bunny Lee

Can you tell us about your memories on Ace Records?
Ronnie Dee: Ace Records was a large recording studio in Boston, Massachusets. We used this facility many times back in the day… eventually, we released all our recordings on our own labels,… Ace did a lot of recordings for many of the professional musicians in the New England area and did a great job. This was back in the day when artists could produce a hit in one take.

Times has changed a lot since you started in the business, back then there were no computers, CD burners, MP3 or most significant, internet. Has it helped or hiderer the music profession in general?
Ronnie Dee: I am not a big supporter of new technology in the music business,… too much electronic enhancements and add ons, … I enjoyed doing music from the basics,… not adding all the effects, delays, echos, overdubbing, … do it for real

You have performed with a lot of popular Rock & Roll, Doo Wop groups and singer from the 50´s and 60´s…
Ronnie Dee: Oh yes, we worked with a lot of groups back in the 50´s and 60´s that included such groups as Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers, Connie Francis, The Skyliners, Dion & The Belmonts, The Platters, The Toys (Lovers Concerto), Len Barry, The Mystics, Bobby Vee, and so many more that helped us learn the basics of performing. We also appeared on all the New England TV dance parties, similar to American Bandstand.

Ronnie, how was Frankie Lymon?
Ronnie Dee: Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers were a fantastic group,… we worked with them at a big night club and concert venue in Revere, Massachusets,… that was back in the day when we used to do 7 shows a week and worked at Jam Sessions on Saturdays and Sundays at times.

What are your plans for the future?
Ronnie Dee: The Satellites will be doing a Cruise from June 23rd to June 28, 2012.

You are still singing…
Ronnie Dee: Ronnie Dee and The Satellites are still playing and today is as much fun and exicitement as it was back in the day,… we love what we do. I have The Satellites and my small commercial trio called “Three´s Company” which between the two groups enables me to sing all kinds of material that I love to sing,… from Dion and The Belmonts songs to the songs of Tony Bennett and Frank Sinatra,… I am a fortunate guy to still be in the mainstream of music and will continue doing what I love best for as long as my God allows me to…

Thank you very much, Ronnie, I hope your dreams still making come true. God bless. Ronnie Dee: Thank you for your patience, I am always here for a wonderful friend like you, you are loved.
